Beyond Just Shade: Why I Built a "Private Fortress" in the Middle of Nowhere
"I’ve been solo overlanding across the French interior for three years, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that nature doesn't always play nice. I’m a professional landscape photographer, which means I spend hours waiting for the perfect light. My previous setup was a basic side awning, but it was useless against the horizontal rain and the dust kicked up by the wind.
When I upgraded to the OpenRoad 270° Awning and added the Full Wall Kit, my entire camping philosophy changed. In the photo you see here, I was camped on a ridge in the Pyrenees. The wind was gusting at 40km/h, but once those walls were zipped on, I had a completely dead-still, private room.
It’s not just about shade anymore; it’s about having a 'basecamp.' I can set up my laptop to edit photos, change my clothes in complete privacy, and run my gas stove without the flame flickering. The aluminum arms on this thing are massive—they feel like they could withstand a hurricane. Most people just buy the awning, but if you’re serious about spending time in the wild, the walls are the best investment you’ll ever make. It gives me my own space, wherever I stop, and that peace of mind is priceless."
